portrait on research trip to scotland

Ed (B.1994) is a Painter currently based in East Cornwall

"My intent as an image maker is to paint through words. I am fascinated by the notion that narrative, truth and fiction can lend themselves to one another in a way that can offer up genuine questions. Words can in fact lie but feeling is universal in its potency.

My work has always centred on an attempt to ebb toward feeling. That subtle terrain that painting can hold without needing to name. During a recent residency in the south of France I painted only what I saw, working outdoors with an easel, this slowing down of gathered fragments in time became anchors back in the studio. They continued to speak not as literal scenes but as emotional residues. This shift brought a clarity where the resolution is about listening to what a painting asks for.

I often think of painting as holding up a torch in a dark cave, where sustained attention is the water that throws up salt.

Painting reveals its truth not through certainty but through possibility. Through the revelations that occur when feeling becomes form. A quiet confrontation with our shared mortality.

In the act of making I seek to illuminate the threads that collectively bind us together as humans. The Kaleidoscopic stars and the future that’s in-front of us all. Memories are giants cast into stone which is a love letter to strength and that tomorrow will be better."
